Celebrating Pride at Chorus: Week One

Chorus is celebrating Pride this year by featuring the voices of our LGBTQ+ employees. Every week in the month of June, we’re publishing a blog post around what it’s like to be queer in tech, whether “out” or not. This questionnaire was anonymous, though some employees chose to use their identities. We applaud the employees who participated for sharing their experiences and we’re proud to have a diversity of voices included in this blog series.

Week One: Talk about your experience being "out" or not within the tech world and how you've felt about sharing your LGBTQ+ identity at work.

Michael Strickland, Office Manager: I am lucky in the sense that my experience being "out" in the tech world has been a positive experience so far. I have always been open at work about being gay and I am glad that I have worked with amazing coworkers. However, I am fully aware that this is not the same experience other individuals who are a part of the LGBTQ+ have had — in tech or in other industries. There is still work that needs to be done in every industry to create work environments that are inclusive and welcoming to everybody.

Anonymous: Only my close friends and coworkers know; I always felt sharing my identity would create more adversity or biases to the workplace.

Anonymous (she/her): At my last company, I knew it wasn't safe to share that I was queer. They changed their logo during June, but otherwise, there’s nothing being done by executives to show support for LGBTQ+ employees. I recently spoke to my old boss who is supportive herself but agreed that coming out at that company would have negatively impacted my career. What a wake up call. When I joined Chorus and saw people using pronouns and Project Choir with executive support for LGBTQ+ initiatives, I knew I was in the right place.

Matt Scheitle, Revenue Enablement Manager (he/him): Being out in any company setting can be difficult, but specifically in tech I have felt like it was more accepting than any other space. The tech world is uniquely diverse as many individuals represent different races, ethnicities, orientations and genders. I have felt that being my true authentic self and being confident in my own skin has allowed me to connect with others. It hasn't always been easy, but being in tech has made it so much easier.
